Aging in Place-The Misconceptions of Home Healthcare

When Home Healthcare first became a service provided to patients, it was most often utilized for Hospice Patients. Many people hear the word “Hospice” and immediately associate the term with a terminal illness or death. When Hospice care was first introduced in most cases the patient was terminally ill and had been given 6 months to live. However, times have changed. An individual can now qualify for Hospice care with chronic illnesses that are not properly managed such as COPD, Congestive Heart Failure and Dementia with significant weight loss. These misconceptions of Hospice care have been associated with Homecare as well. While our Home Health Care Agency will provide minocycline to any individual who needs it, our services extend beyond end of life care.

Misconceptions

Aging in Place-The Misconceptions of Home Healthcare. What is aging in place? Aging in place is “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.” A recent survey conducted by the AARP concluded that nearly 90% of seniors surveyed would prefer to age in place. One of the most common found determining factors for this is the frequent increased cost of nursing home care. Check out more information on Nursing Home Vs. Home Care here. A Home Healthcare Agency can completely eliminate the need to ever utilize a nursing home by assisting seniors in activities of daily living. These activities of daily living include bathing, cooking, cleaning, transportation, and many other activities. While many individuals never consider home care because of the cost, Home care is a more cost effective alternative to a nursing home because it is a one-on-one service. One-on-one continuous care can detect a change in condition very easily on and help rectify these situations before they occur, which results in Home Care being a more cost effective means of providing care for a loved one. Many people also believe that Home Care must be arranged in advance and before an emergency occurs. This is not necessarily true. Home Healthcare providers have become accustomed to assessing individuals in a moments notice. In emergency situations, care can be provided within a few hours of needing Home Care Services. Home Healthcare can almost always be arranged within 24 hours from the time Home Care services are requested.
